Produced in Washington, Pennsylvania, Liberty Pole Spirits Peated Bourbon Whiskey is bottled at 92 proof. The mashbill consists of 59% Bloody Butcher corn and 41% barley malt and peated barley malt.
I quite like this. The heritage - brought through imported peated barley - is palpable and gives this a uniquely “right” feeling. Call it spot-on with intentionality. In the dearth of peated bourbons, this is the one to follow.
A peated bourbon is an interesting idea, but in practice, this expression needs some work. The nose is quite inviting, but is followed up by a palate that really beats you over the head with smoke. It’s like drinking the remnants of a campfire; even the light sweetness that peeks through has a burnt character, and the oak is more bitter than woody.
