  • This new batch is good stuff, make no mistake, but I found the lighter, airy character of its younger predecessor gave it room to express more complexity. In this instance, the extra couple of years just put more of the barrel into the whiskey, and I think the vanilla flavors coming out of that stepped on the toes of the actual spirit.

  • It's far too precious and unique to drown in a cocktail, in my humble opinion.

  • Nose:

Sweet and bright on the nose, this whiskey delivers some classic wheat character, which is met by lemon curd, orange peel, oats, frosting, praline, light cinnamon and a kiss of root beer.

  • Taste:

Sweet and delicious on the palate. Plenty of wheat character again here, but the palate is less fruit-forward than the nose, instead taking on a more dessert-forward, traditionally sweet profile: honey, caramel, toasted walnuts, more praline. A note of anise strikes toward the back palate.

  • Finish:

Lovely finish that takes a sharp turn, introducing some cola, leather and a heavier dose of anise — plus some honey.

  • Overall:

This is an easily enjoyable, well-structured pour. Any whiskey drinker with a sweet tooth who doesn't mind wheat should enjoy this a great deal.

  • Score:
