Jaywalk straight rye is distilled by New York Distilling Company from a mashbill of 75% New York rye (a mix of Horton Heirloom Rye and Field Race Rye), 13% corn and 12% malted barley. The whiskey is a blend of barrels age six, seven and eight years and is bottled at 92 proof.
This is a superb whiskey that surpasses other expressions from rye-focused craft distillers in terms of quality and taste, and acts as a good alternative to your typical 95/5 rye from MGP or a Kentucky-style with just over 51 percent rye grain.
NY Distilling Co.’s Jaywalk Rye may be a head scratcher on the nose, but the palate and finish shine with delicious interplay between the grain’s sweet and spicy elements.
All in all, this is a very solid rye from NY Distilling Co., particularly impressive in the sense of how much value they’re still able to offer at $50 price point, particularly considering the years of labor that went into reviving the Horton rye being used.
