Inspired by the New Orleans cocktail Cafe Brulot, Hochstadter's Slow & Low Coffee Old Fashioned is a ready-to-drink cocktail that's available in 4-packs of 100-milliliter cans ($19.99) or 750-milliliter bottles ($29.99). The cocktail is built with rye whiskey, Intelligentsia coffee, raw honey, demerara, angostura bitters and orange peel. The brand describes the cocktail as "extra dry" and says it contains the equivalent of one sugar cube per 2-ounce serving. The ABV is 40%.

  • This isn't the best RTD Old Fashioned I've had, but it's quite good.

  • Nose:

Loads of coffee plus chili powder, angostura, vanilla.

  • Taste:

Plenty of coffee once again joined by spice: cinnamon and anise, plus a bit of orange peel

  • Finish:

Cinnamon and anise lead the finish, with some coffee and orange peel filling in the background.

  • Overall:

A solid spirit-forward Old Fashioned with plenty of coffee, anise and orange peel, plus a touch of vanilla. The use of rye whiskey makes for a dry take on the Old Fashioned, which is a welcome reprieve from the throng of uber-sweet competing RTD Old Fashioneds. This isn't the best RTD Old Fashioned I've had, but it's quite good.
