Huge rye spice on the nose, toffee, cracked pepper, big herbal spice, cherries, strawberry and a hint of leather and tobacco.
Moderate palate, rich and full of sweet toffee and big rye spice. It’s herbal, it’s peppery, there’s loads of ginger and rye bread. A nice pop of tobacco, cherry cordials, blueberry and blackberry, some savory ginger and a bit of sweet oak.
Long finish, heavy on the rye spice, sweet oak, red berries and strawberry. The port shows through nicely without making this a jammy, fruity overload.
This year’s Midwinter’s shows lots of rye character with a nicely integrated port finish. There’s not too much rye, it’s well aged and has loads of complexity, and the port finish is additive and enjoyable making this release a success.
