  • There’s not too much rye, it’s well aged and has loads of complexity, and the port finish is additive and enjoyable making this release a success.

  • A Midwinter Night’s Dram Act 12 is delicious stuff, and a slight but marked improvement on last year’s version.

  • I’d have preferred to see more sweetness in this Act, but perhaps that’s being saved for the next Scene.

  • Nose:

Huge rye spice on the nose, joined by toffee, cracked pepper, big herbal spice, cherries, strawberry and a hint of leather and tobacco.

  • Taste:

Moderate palate, rich and full of sweet toffee and big rye spice. It’s herbal and peppery with loads of ginger and rye bread, plus a nice pop of tobacco, cherry cordials, blueberry and blackberry, some savory ginger and a bit of sweet oak.

  • Finish:

Long finish that's heavy on the rye spice, sweet oak, red berries and strawberry. The port shows through nicely without making this a jammy, fruity overload.

  • Overall:

This year’s Midwinter’s shows lots of rye character with a nicely integrated port finish. There’s not too much rye, it’s well aged and has loads of complexity, and the port finish is additive and enjoyable making this release a success.
