This is one of four barrel-finished rye whiskeys released by Indiana distillery Hard Truth in October 2023. Each rye in the series starts with Hard Truth's Sweet Mash Rye, which is distilled from a mashbill of 94% rye and 6% malted barley. This whiskey was finished in Cognac VSOP barrels.

  • It’s hard to discount just how far Hard Truth is coming with their ryes. This cognac-finished release is some of the best I’ve had from the distillery, and it won’t be long before all eyes turn to this under-the-radar producer.

  • Nose:

Black magic on the nose — unbelievable richness for a rye of this age. Heavy buttery sweetness, rich oak and caramel, a dash of pepper and old tobacco. Cognac is present but not powerful, nuanced and enticing.

  • Taste:

Moderate palate with plenty going on. Big oak pops first with baking spice, crème brûlée, toffee and pepper. Hint of ginger, pop of tobacco and layers of baking spice: clove, cinnamon, pepper.

  • Finish:

Long finish. Layers of spice and pleasant cognac character mingle with desserty rye. Pepper, clove, oak and tobacco.

  • Overall:

It’s hard to discount just how far Hard Truth is coming with their ryes. This cognac-finished release is some of the best I’ve had from the distillery, and it won’t be long before all eyes turn to this under-the-radar producer.
