Unveiled in March 2024, this is a collaboration between Hard Truth Distilling Company in Nashville, Indiana, and Mellencamp Whiskey Company, co-founded by Hud Mellencamp, the son of John Mellencamp. This is the second release in the collector's series of whiskey collaborations between the two brands. Each bottle in the series sports original artwork by John Mellencamp on its label. Farmer’s Reserve showcases a 1991 painting called "American Boy And Girl." As for the whiskey itself, this is a blend of Hard Truth's Chocolate Malt Rye and Sweet Mash Bourbon whiskeys. The blend was finished in toasted Amburana — a popular but polarizing South American wood. This whiskey has a suggested retail price of $69.99 but sold out shortly after its release.

  • Nose:

Rich, sweet nose that’s full of custard, cinnamon, a light minerality, some pecan pie nuttiness, dark chocolate, ginger and carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. The amburana is present here but so far in check.

  • Taste:

Warm, spice-laden palate. Lots of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, chocolate shavings, a nice hit of oak and some cracked pepper. The amburana is impressively contained. It’s utilized expertly, and as a result this whiskey has more of a chocolate/mocha sweetness to it vs. a straight-up Amburana assault. The rye from the blend kicks in some lovely peppermint. The minerality from the nose is back on the palate, but it's light and inoffensive; it works. There’s a bit of a caramel-covered granny smith apple thing going on toward the back of the palate, as well, with a pop of acidity surrounded by sweetness.

  • Finish:

Mint and cinnamon kick off a long finish with some clove, amburana, chocolate cake and oak.

  • Overall:

This pour is an expertly crafted rockstar from head to toe and among the best uses of Amburana you'll encounter.

  • Score:

    88
