Frankly, I like this. It’s uncomplicated, it’s not quite my style, but its got this huge drinkability that’s clearly an asset. In Alsatian we would say that it’s very ‘süffig’. A draw.
I always look forward to trying these yearly releases and the Glenmorangie Spios is no exception. I may not like each year’s release, but that doesn’t make them any less exciting; experimentation is always a fun thing to witness.
While it lacks the rough-and-tumble harshness rye can often have, it goes about as far as you could expect from a more restrained spirit like what Glenmorangie tends to produce.
Again, there’s some youth apparent here, the finish falling back to its barley roots. That’s not a crime, but it doesn’t let the barrel treatment shine quite as much as I suspect the distillery would have liked.
In my opinion this expression is also another gateway whisky to American palate as two other well known Speyside distilleries, Glenfiddich and The Macallan did with their 14 year old Bourbon Barrel Reserve and 12 year old Double Cask respectively.
I don't like this. Whatever rye they used isn't complementing their spirit, and its adding a layer of ethanol and musty youth to the already bitter base spirit.
Bitter, spice heavy. Thin to medium mouth feel. Sweet vanilla, light caramel. Pear, bitterness and some herbal spice. The rye is definitely evident.
Finish:
Medium in length, but a good deal of heat for the proof. Young, malty and musty. Some apples and pears.
Overall:
