  • Looking at Dickel Bourbon Aged 18 Years, it is really a gorgeous example of what an American whiskey with this age statement should taste like.

  • It’s delightfully drinkable yet straightforward in construction and only modestly complex, leaving a touch of char on the finish that the younger Dickel Bourbon lacks.

  • This release is big on fruit and flavor but surprisingly moderate on oak. It's clearly blended to round out heavy tannin and present a lot of Dickel’s more distinctive notes, and it works.

  • Nose:

Sweet and loaded with caramel on the nose. Honey, baked apples, raspberry and a hint of orange peel.

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel and a pleasant viscosity. Honey, caramels, raspberry, orange peel, toffee and some buttercream. Pepper, light oak (surprising for the age!).

  • Finish:

Moderate finish. Pleasant but not terribly long lived. That said, it’s bursting with fruit, minerality, honey, sweet cream and a lovely raspberry note.

  • Overall:

This release is big on fruit and flavor but surprisingly moderate on oak. It's clearly blended to round out heavy tannin and present a lot of Dickel’s more distinctive notes, and it works. Whether $510 for a 45%-ABV bourbon is for you is another question, but the whiskey is sound if barrel proof isn’t your jam.
