Fuenteseca Cosecha 2018 Huerta "Las Antenas" is a single-estate tequila produced in the Los Valles region of Jalisco at Tequileña. Blue Weber agaves harvested in Michoacán are cooked in low-pressure autoclaves, extracted with a combination of roller and screw mill and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The tequila is then double distilled in copper pot stills and rested in stainless steel without barrel aging before being bottled at 44.8% ABV. This is a brand best known for its ultra-aged statements, so it'll be interesting to see how Fuenteseca fares with the precise opposite.

  • That olive note from the aroma continues into the palate stronger than ever. Tarragon, anise, roasted agave and bay leaf add to the prevailing brine vibe, while subtle, almost imperceptible hints of cream cheese and banana add a welcome levity.

  • Nose:

I've smelled salty tequilas before, but none with quite this flavor of maritime brine. Olives and capers are the biggest notes, followed by hints of vinegar, sage, white pepper and fresh squeezed lime. Could easily be mistaken for a dirty martini if nosed blind.

  • Taste:

That olive note from the aroma continues into the palate stronger than ever. Tarragon, anise, roasted agave and bay leaf add to the prevailing brine vibe, while subtle, almost imperceptible hints of cream cheese and banana add a welcome levity. Floral undertones reveal themselves after a few sips. Lots of different things going on, and they all manage to work together excellently.

  • Finish:

The finish makes good use of the slightly above-average proof point, folding in black pepper, tilled earth, agave and a tickle of vanilla sweetness.

  • Overall:

A one-of-a-kind blanco that excels in a powerfully specific flavor profile. The minerality and sea salt at play here is sure to evoke a different memory for everyone who tries it (I'm imagining a Ship in a Bottle). Really fantastic stuff, and an easy addition to any discerning tequila drinkers collection. Price tag might take a little getting used to though.
