What we've got here is, by most accounts, the second oldest tequila ever released to market. Distilled in September 1995, the batch was first aged in ex-Canadian rye whiskey barrels for six years. The tequilas were then extracted, blended and rebarreled, with 47% returning to Canadian white oak and the remaining 53% going to European dark oak previously used to age California red wine.

  • Less sweet than the nose teased; this is where those spicy Canadian rye notes start to evolve. Clove, breakfast cereal, subdued maple, vanilla and blackberries.

  • Nose:

Caramelized pears, plum, figs and pecan pie all over the nose. The intensity of all the above is quite unlike any tequila I've smelled before. It's quite dense in a custardy, roasted fruit sort of way, underlined by a decent showing of roasted agave.

  • Taste:

Less sweet than the nose teased; this is where those spicy Canadian rye notes start to evolve. Clove, breakfast cereal, subdued maple, vanilla and blackberries.

  • Finish:

Really dry and oaky, the only part of the experience I'd dare to use the word over oaked. Black pepper, dried cherries, licorice and cinnamon settle and remain on the finish for a good long while.

  • Overall:

There's tons to like in here, especially as you parse out those unexpected cask types that are rarely if ever used in tequila maturation. Both rye and lowland agave are famous for their spicy palate, and in hindsight, it's surprising that more brands have rolled with the similarity. Still, it's hard to shake the feeling that this tequila never lived up to its stellar aroma.
