Released in July 2025, Frey Ranch Five Grain Single Barrel Bourbon is the first whiskey from Frey Ranch featuring corn, wheat, barley, rye and oat — all five of the grains that "Whiskey Farmer" Colby Frey grows on his farm. Oats are notoriously difficult to distill, which is a major reason why you don't see oat whiskeys very often. The mashbill of this expression is 60% corn, 10% wheat, 10% rye, 10% malted barley and 10% oat. Two barrels were released on an extremely limited basis: #3011 (156 bottles release) and #3016 (186 bottles released). We are tasting barrel #3016, which was aged for six years, two months and 1.5 days and bottled at 130.24 proof. Suggested retail price was $89 per 750-milliliter bottle.

  • Nose:

Oak, maple, powdered sugar, cocoa, custard, orange peel, cinnamon, clove, waffle cone, honey, brown sugar, raisin bread.

  • Taste:

Wow, this is delicious stuff. The palate is rich and flavorful with a viscous mouthfeel, a delicious flavor profile with a lot of heat. Leather meets a lovely combination of cinnamon and ginger and honey, plus nougat, oats, gingerbread, lemon oil and apple pie. Peanut brittle, blackberry, tobacco.

  • Finish:

The finish is long, layered and very satisfying. It opens with cinnamon, tea and cocoa powder, then moves to oak and graham cracker plus more honey and golden delicious apples.

  • Overall:

This is an absolute treat. It’s rich, satisfying, honeyed, bruising and delectable. One of the better bourbons I've tasted in 2025.
