Foursquare Triptych is a single blended rum produced in Barbados by Foursquare Distillery. Bottled at barrel proof of 56% ABV, it was released in November 2016 as a blend of three single blended rums aged in different casks: 2004 ex-bourbon, 2005 ex-Madeira and 2007 virgin oak.
I’ve struggled with this over the course of the 5 week period….dwindling my stocks of both Triptych and 2006 in side by side comparisons…..But I can hand on heart say, step aside 2006….there is a new benchmark in town……for now…..The amazing thing is, this wasn’t even the best Rum that I tasted on our visits to Foursquare….
Chocolate is strong again, a hint of toffee, lots of oak and sweet n spicy notes. It’s surprising it’s not over oaked since it was partly aged in virgin oak. A clear sign of skill. The finish is very long and on the drier side. It’s velvet and plain amazing.
I’ve actually enjoyed Triptych more over time. When I tried Criterion I instantly fell in love with it. With Triptych there was a slight adjustment. I think the Virgin oak part of the blend have taken a little time for me to adjust to. Still I’m pleased I adjusted and I’m very happy I was able to snag a bottle of this. I’ll certainly try and get another one.
To take several ex-bourbon blends and put those together, or to marry a few aged and unaged components, is one thing. To find a way to merge three distinctly separate and differently-aged pot-column blends, to age that and come out the other end with this rum, is quite another. So much could have gone wrong, and so much didn’t — it’s a testament to the hard work and talent of Richard Seale and his team at Foursquare.
