Fettercairn 16 Year Old is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky produced at Fettercairn Distillery, founded in 1824 in the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland’s Eastern Highlands. Owned and operated by Whyte & Mackay, the distillery is known for its copper cooling ring stills, which run water down the outside of the still necks to encourage reflux and create a lighter, more tropical spirit character. The core U.S. release is aged for at least 16 years in a combination of first-fill and refill American oak ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads. Bottled at 46.4% ABV without chill filtration and at natural color, it retails for around $89.99.

  • Tropical fruit wafts up after in the form of grilled pineapples and peaches, less bright and more caramelized compared to the 12 year. The palate behaves similarly. It’s a touch less bright, and instead of cream soda, flavors are led by moderately dark caramel.

  • Nose:

    The nose is light, sweet, fruity and quite bourbon-y. Buttered rolls, white chocolate-blueberry scones and a big butterscotch note.

  • Taste:

    Light mouthfeel. Apple, Pear, white peach, grapes, currant, macadamia, white pepper, cinnamon, tannin and a wisp of smoke.

  • Finish:

    Long, winding finish. Cinnamon, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, grape.

  • Overall:

    Light yet quite complex and nuanced.
