Distilled by Oxbow, this is a spiced rum from the brand that contains botanicals, citrus, vanilla and other natural flavors, along with some coloring. Bottled at 44% ABV, I'm looking forward to taking a look at an "artisanal" perspective on Spiced Rum.

  • Overall this is really something. It's probably the best spiced rum I've tried, but that's not to say that I've had many. While it's clearly flavored and sweetened to some degree, False River doesn't push either of those elements so far as to make it a cloying, unappealing pour.

  • Nose:

Whoah! Interesting. Punchy vanilla and caramel up front. There's some pepper, the botanicals are hard to read but effervescent as well and entirely pleasant. Pepper, almost a nutmeg and cinnamon character as well. Citrus is lurking but sneaky.

  • Taste:

Sweet on the palate, it's viscous and rich although there is definitely some flavoring and dosage presenting with an odd viscosity here - lightly syrupy. Nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, caramel and a touch of sweet potato. Really interesting here, the ABV is settled nicely. Really cool stuff.

  • Finish:

Long finish, a tad sweet, but it's not overly spiced, overly sweet or artificial tasting for the most part.
