This is a limited release from Espolon, although I expect it won't stay that way forever. Matured for 18 months in barrels, this Anejo promises to be interesting. I am a fan of their other bottlings for being relatively strong quality at relatively low prices, so I hope this holds up. Lets give it a go.
Thin, but with a good deal of ethanol. Sweet, lots of characteristic tequila agave. Vanilla. Light oak. Some pepper. Nothing crazy here, but also nothing bad. It’s simple and unremarkable but entirely competent.
On the palate, this is a lively tequila with a big burst of black pepper and agave, baking spices, cinnamon and a hint of mango. A lightly floral note, honeysuckle and orchids appears next before ending with honey, bay leaf and a cool menthol note.
Aromas and flavors of werther’s original butterscotch candies, cassis leaves, blond tobacco, coconut oil, and american oak. A complex, earthy, and creamy expression of an Añejo Tequila that is sure to delight fans of the style.
The body engages right away, pushing that silky sweetness into some woody notes with a slight, agave-driven, vegetal edge. The finish is long and complex, hitting some racy red pepper notes as it begins, then punching up butterscotch. It’s all on point and just about perfect for an anejo.
