Elijah Craig Toasted Rye is distilled from a classic "Kentucky rye" mashbill of 51% rye, 35% corn and 14% malted barley. The whiskey matures in new oak barrels and then is transferred at barrel proof into a custom toasted new oak barrel developed with Independent Stave Company. The toasting process lasts nearly an hour, followed by a heat ramping step that enhances the barrel's flavor profile, per the brand. It hosts a suggested retail price of $54.99.

  • I like it more than the toasted bourbon by a bit, but I just don’t think toasted finish is a home run…for now.

  • Finishing their rye in a new toasted barrel slightly elevates Heaven Hill’s Elijah Craig Rye into the product it should have been from day one.

  • I’ll likely keep a bottle on hand for when I want more oak in my at-home mixed drinks. And to be clear, it’s plenty tasty to sip neat.

  • All in all, my impression here is that Elijah Craig Toasted Rye Whiskey represents a positive evolution for the company’s use of toasted barrels, likely reflecting what they’ve continued to learn about whiskey/barrel interaction since 2020.

  • A drinker with a strong fondness for any two of the following — rye, double new oak aging or dessert whiskey — will find the price tag well worth it.

  • Nose:

Big rye spice, marshmallows, fresh cedar, loads of oak, spice and sweetness.

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel. Woody again. Lots of cracked pepper, herbal rye spice, a hint of cedar. There’s a big sweetness towards the back palate. Mild oak. A crackle of rye spice and light oak.

  • Finish:

Short to moderate finish with a good bit of spice, more sweetness and light woodiness.

  • Overall:

There’s a cedar-y character about this pour that’s interesting but ultimately leaves it feeling a touch on the young side. I like it more than the toasted bourbon by a bit, I just don’t think the toasted finish is a home run… for now.
