  • So, it’s an atypical batch. And you know what? I dug that atypical batch.

  • The year’s first Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is a solid bourbon, let’s get that out of the way. It certainly doesn’t stack all the way up to its immediate (and exceptional) predecessor in overall quality, but again, that doesn’t make it a bad whiskey by any means.

  • The youngest and second lowest proof Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Batch released to date, Batch A124 offers a rich, delicious flavor profile proving that a lower age and proof doesn’t necessarily equate to a subpar pour.

  • This is classic EC Barrel Proof all the way, holding a slight touch of sweetness as it quietly fades.

  • Rich on the palate, A124 is lighter on oak and cola than previous releases with a bump up on sweet desserts, caramels, toffee and tobacco.

  • All in all, I would recommend Elijah Craig Barrel Proof A124 to those who enjoy brighter, fruit and spice-forward cask strength bourbons that are a little on the wild side.

  • As expected with the proof, it is slightly hot in the finish with a pervasive charred oakiness, though it retains its richness on the palate.

  • Although not my favorite release of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, A124 is still a stand-out bourbon and an insane value at just around $70.

  • Nose:

Big honey, spice, caramel candies and baking spice on the nose. Sweet oak, a touch of pepper, toffee, crème brûlée and tobacco.

  • Taste:

Rich on the palate, A124 is lighter on oak and cola than previous releases with a bump up on sweet desserts, caramels, toffee and tobacco. This is sweet, complex and full of spice — nicely done. It's different, interesting and enjoyable.

  • Finish:

Long finish that's heavy on the caramels, candies, toffee, tobacco and sweet vanilla.

  • Overall:

This batch is noticeably distinctive compared to its predecessors, and that's not a a knock on it. I enjoy how the profile changes release to release, with this batch featuring sweet desserts, heavy baking spice and some tobacco. I dig it.

  • Score:

    92
