The proof shines through, especially in the long lingering heat that develops in the finish. It’s not the best showing for the brand, however it’s also far from the worst and should please most Elijah Craig and high proof bourbon fans alike.
This version gives me what I seek in whiskey, and what I find lacking in a lot of bourbons. I like the cigar and ashy palate it provides, and gives me that campfire feel without the bottle price of High West.
Generous oak courses through the palate, the drying tannins reining in the dense sweetness as the whiskey brandishes bold spices, including allspice, pepper, and clove.
On the palate, the alcohol is present in the pronounces chili spice, but gives way to a creamy caramel and stewed apricot flavor. Water is recommended and helps to open up a nice viscosity in the whiskey.
Surprisingly approachable at full proof, water is a clear benefit, but only a couple of drops. This really brings out the fruity notes in the whiskey, along with a milk chocolate note that lingers on the finish. I had a hard time balancing the water here, as even a few drops too much will water the whiskey down too far.
If they ever stop making this, or change anything about it, I will be extremely disappointed. This is the standard of what whiskey should be and I would highly recommend to anyone that likes high proof whiskey to try this and tell me what they think.
