In celebration of its 65th anniversary, El Tequileño released a very limited lot of this blended extra añejo. The spirit was gathered from three batches: one matured for four years and nine months in ex-Jack Daniel’s whiskey barrels, another aged three years in French Oak casks that previously held El Tequileño reserves and a third that third spent four years and one month in unused French Oak. As far as we can tell, this is the only extra añejo that the brand has ever released.

The nose is remarkably scotch-like, opening with peat and a soothing butter note. Apricot, flowers and caramel make their way in as well after a few minutes. The overall vibe is quite light on its feet for an extra añejo.
Roasted agave and orange are the stars of the show, combining for a delicately sweet sip filled with vanilla, honey, earth and light nuttiness. The barrel spice and oak influence are marginal, but their presence is not missed in the slightest. If anything, this has the bright and sweet flavor of a reposado, albeit a complex one.
Vanilla and crème brulée coat the back of the throat for a brief, candied finish. Yum.
Great stuff! The mix of stone fruit, honey and caramel feels like a blast of spring on a cold winter night. The roasted agave makes its presence known, as does a hazelnut note that brings together all those pastry-like influences. Its $800 asking price, however, feels a smidge insane. If you see it behind the bar, best to consider it a "look but don't touch" delicacy.
