El Mayor Rosado Tequila Reposado

  • Distiller

    NOM 1603

  • Bottler

    El Mayor

  • ABV

    40%

  • Age

    9 months

  • Price $60 to $99.99

The latest in a trend of pink-hued "rosado" bottlings sweeping the tequila world, this expression from El Mayor spends a minimum of nine months in ex-Cabernet Sauvignon casks. It's appearance more closely resembles a rosé than an agave spirit, an obvious advantage on the liquor store shelf.

  • The palate finds that the tequila has ample sweetness up its sleeve, that coconut popping alongside a healthy slug of vanilla, then moving into notes of cola, expressed orange oil, and a lemon peel note as the finish approaches.

  • This expression avoids the saccharine sweetness and syrupy viscosity of some other rosados, even if its flavor comes across a little one-note.

  • Nose:

A welcome fragrance reminiscent of potpourri. Rose petals, blackcurrant, pie crust and hint of vanilla swirl in the air. Eyes closed, it could easily be mistaken for a Moscato wine.

  • Taste:

The light and sweet influences continue onto the palate, though in slightly vaguer form. Flowers, raisins and peach give way to brief touches of roasted agave and macadamia nut. At 40% ABV, the mouthfeel comes across pretty thin.

  • Finish:

Fleeting finish punctuated by white pepper and nuttiness.

  • Overall:

This expression avoids the saccharine sweetness and syrupy viscosity of some other rosados, even if its flavor comes across a little one-note. At its price point, I'd happily recommend it inside a tequila spritz or otherwise summery cocktail.
