From Kendall Jenner to Kevin Hart, the celebrity-owned tequila market has reached a point of complete oversaturation. Mezcal, on the other hand, still shows plenty of speculative promise. Launched in 2019 by "Breaking Bad" alum Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, Dos Hombres remains one of the few star-studded mezcal bottlings on the market. The spirit itself is pretty straightforward stuff, distilled from agave Espadin in Oaxaca and bottled at 42% ABV. Let's see how these criminal masterminds made the transition from meth to mezcal.

  • Simple and not very complex. Immediately there’s a good bit of that campfire smoke that comes through as well as a bit of slate or salinity, which fulfills the promise of what we were smelling in the glass [...] Once the spirit is gone, that smoky taste has a tendency to linger for quite some time.

  • The palate is a structured mix of orange blossom, honeysuckle, milk chocolate, and meaty smoke. Hints of pineapple and grapefruit zest come into the midpalate before a long, zesty, smoky, and sweet finish.

  • The smokiness serves to temper the fruitiness, calming the notes of baked apple and lemon curd with some needed saline and savory notes. The palate turns the formula around: First fruity sweetness, then a light smokiness to add nuance.

  • Nose:

Funky, sweet and fun on the nose, there’s mango, a faint jelly bean sort of sweetness, some citrus and faint clay and vanilla.

  • Taste:

Light and sweet on the palate, some clay and pepper, a touch of limestone, lemon and a pop of pepper.

  • Finish:

Short finish, clean, sweet and peppery. There’s a papery note, faint minerality.

  • Overall:

There isn’t a ton going on with this pour, and while that’s not a sin, it doesn’t make it the most interesting Mezcal on the block. All things considered, this isn’t a problem either, as this makes for a great entry to the category, presenting a lot of the sweet, fruity characteristics I enjoy in agave.
