Don Gato

Comedian Danny McBride, best known for his roles in "Pineapple Express" and "The Righteous Gemstones," is the latest in a long, long line of celebrities to debut a tequila brand. Released in 2024, Don Gato is distilled at NOM 1607 (the same behind Kendall Jenner's 818 Tequila) and reportedly uses an additive-free recipe. Everything's very tongue in cheek, with the brand's titular mascot being a cat-loving luchador with a taste for liquor. As for that liquor, it's worth mentioning that Don Gato Reposado is aged only two months, meaning it just barely scoots beyond the legal definition for a blanco.

Raw agave and golden raisins dominate the nose. Prickles of whiskey-like cherry and banana candies reveal themselves after a few whiffs.
Dry, spicy flavors of tilled earth, lemon peel and chamomile. It's not as sweet as the nose suggested, but I think that works just fine for lowland agave, which this absolutely is. I'd note, however, that the oak influence is barely noticeable. Need to try this side by side with the brand's blanco to see where the difference lies.
Brief and slightly bitter, punctuated by a lick of black pepper and salinity.
Celebrity tequila has grown so synonymous with cloyingly sweet additives that it's nice to see a brand go in a different direction. Don Gato Repo provides simple, straightforward agave flavor well worth its sub-$50 price tag. The oak influence is marginal, to say the very least, but as long as you know what you're getting into that's just fine.
