Doc Swinson's Solera Rye, part of the Alter Ego Series, is a blend of MGP rye whiskies finished in ex-rum casks from Trinidad, Venezuela and Jamaica using the solera aging method. The whiskey is bottled at 95 proof after mellowing for several months in these barrels.
My criticisms may paint a negative picture, but that’s mainly because the nose had me expecting a certain experience, one that didn’t feel followed through.
More times than not, a whiskey finished in a secondary barrel can actually become worse at higher proof points as flavors and scents fight each other rather than compliment each other
Doc Swinson’s Alter Ego Rye Solera Method Rum Finish is an excellent whiskey to add to any collection. It is perfectly good to drink neat or mix in a cocktail. If you like rum finishes, this whiskey stands out. Keep an eye for more releases by Jesse Parker at Doc Swinson’s, because he is blending some good stuff.
