  • Again, I was surprised at how familiar some of these notes are to a lower proof whiskey, while remaining unique in ways that I really enjoyed.

  • Nose:

Sweet and earthy, wood and wet leaves mingle with marzipan and cherry syrup. There is a spice that comes through eventually, akin to cloves and nutmeg.

  • Taste:

The initial taste of cherry filling carries over from the nose, joined by the cask’s woody influence. Vanilla emerges mid-palate, followed by familiar baking spices. The texture is thinner and less chewy than expected, offering a lighter mouthfeel.

  • Finish:

Somewhat brief, with warming spice and a subtle tannic edge that adds a touch of dryness.

  • Overall:

Diplomático Single Vintage 2013 is a great expression that may appeal to whiskey lovers, as many of its flavor notes — oak, spice and cherries — are more commonly found in that realm. While the rum offers some complexity, the mouthfeel is a bit thin, and a slightly higher ABV could have added more structure and depth, giving the flavors a stronger foundation to stand on.
