Del Maguey — by far the biggest name in the American mezcal market — is a common sight behind the bar counter thanks to its signature Del Maguey Vida expression. Unabashedly smoky and fruit-forward, Del Maguey is now looking to expand its palate with an "accessible" alternative sold under the same name at a similar price point. Let's see how it stacks up against the brand's massive catalog.

  • Pleasant and sweet on the palate at first. There’s a woody ashiness here, sweet cream, melon and a bit of honey and lime. Hint of clay, more wood ash and smoke.

  • The body is on medium light and has a tangy mid palate. Upon exhaling, you have a puff of smoke and more clay and earthy notes coming through. Finish length is average.

  • The palate finds that fruit taking a slight lemon tack, again offering a grilled quality that takes the citrus notes in a different direction. Cooked agave, baking spice, and notes of rye bread dough are percolate behind that fruit, moving slowly toward smokier climes.

  • Nose:

Bright melon, honey and bold char, acrid smoke and a bit of pepper.

  • Taste:

Pleasant and sweet on the palate at first. There’s a woody ashiness here, sweet cream, melon and a bit of honey and lime. Hint of clay, more wood ash and smoke.

  • Finish:

Pleasant finish overall but leans a bit acrid here once more with plasticity, ashy smoke and a hint of clay.

  • Overall:

It’s clear that this is produced to push a good deal of smoke and ash character into whatever cocktail positions this pour, but overall it’s not bad. If you like things on the smokey side, it’s well made and fine. Just don’t count on it for a far reaching interpretation of what most mezcal is like.
