Del Maguey — the biggest name in the American mezcal market — is always finding new ways to expand its catalog. The brand's flagship Vida expression was recently joined by a low-smoke "Vida Puebla" alternative. Here we have a third rendition, Vida de Muertos, bottled at 45% ABV from a limited center cut of the usual distillate. Muertos pays homage to autumnal Day of the Dead bottlings, apparently upping some of the floral flavor.

Ashy up front but full of creamy sweetness, some clay, honey, pepper, a bit of plasticity.
Moderate mouthfeel, mostly ash and char to kick off with a bit of agave, apple, some charcoal and minerality.
Long finish. Much more balanced than standard Vida and the Puebla, this is pleasant and has a bit more going on as it escapes.
Pleasant overall, this is the most balanced of the Vida expressions to day and I quite like it.
