Ginvitational Day 16! Distilled here in Wisconsin, Death's Door Gin features a couple locally grown botanicals. Using WI juniper, fennel and coriander, this London Dry style gin is bottled at 47% ABV, and billed as an all purpose gin. Let's get to it.
Super interesting profile but I really like it. I’m sad this is now hard to find given them going out of business but I think it’s pretty awesome. I'll be curious to see if the buyers of their remaining stock produce it again or not.
The list of botanicals in Death's Door Gin is pared back to only three: juniper, coriander, and fennel. They manage to construct a surprisingly complex gin from so few raw materials. The fragrance is soft and slightly floral, while the juniper on the palate is balanced by the licorice-like notes of fennel that soften the spirit.
For sure, you can taste its trio of botanical components quite clearly — modest juniper, a dusky citrus coriander, and a licorice whip of fennel on the back end. After that simple beginning, a surprising conclusion awaits. Pie crust notes linger on the finish, along with notes of graham crackers, mint, and tobacco, adding complexity to a spirit where one wouldn’t expect to find it.

Nose:
Strong citrus, rosemary, basil, pepper. Lovely and rich, sweet with a peppery bite.

Sweet and creamy, really strong vanilla note to pair with anise, brown butter, pepper, bubblegum and herbs. Bonkers unique.
Finish:
Sweet, hint of cinnamon and bubblegum, lemon and lime, pepper and potato rolls.
Overall:
Super interesting profile but I really like it. I’m sad this is now hard to find given them going out of business but I think it’s pretty awesome. I'll be curious to see if the buyers of their remaining stock produce it again or not.
