This is a non-alcoholic aperitif from singer Katy Perry's brand, De Soi (pronounced "de swa"). Presumably named for the Switzerland resort town, St. Moritz, this sparkling non-alc canned beverage is, according to Perry, "winter in a glass." It's a sober, holiday-themed riff on the Moscow mule. De Soi St. Moritz Mule is gluten-free, non-GMO and contains no artificial colors or flavors. Four-packs of 8-ounce cans sell for $20.

  • Ginger — to make it a “mule” — is present but quite dialed back, the result being a fully refreshing concoction that has plenty going on and feels perfectly festive, particularly given the bright red color.

  • It's fruity, spicy and reasonably complex, which is an attribute you don't always find in non-alc releases.

  • Nose:

Bright, fruity and spice-laden on the nose. Cranberry juice, rosemary and, ginger allspice. It smells like a cranberry-infused spiced apple cider. Very holiday appropriate.

  • Taste:

The palate leans spicy initially with rosemary, cardamom and coriander. It quickly segues into fruity territory with ultra-tart pomegranate seeds and cran-apple juice.

  • Finish:

The Moritz Mule finishes tart at first — with more pomegranate seeds — and then hits you with a bit of rosemary and loads of powdered ginger and nutmeg, which hang around for a while.

  • Overall:

I quite enjoy this! It's fruity, spicy and reasonably complex, which is an attribute you don't always find in non-alc releases. It strays a little into pucker-your-lips overly tart territory, but it works pretty well on my palate and is a great non-alc option for the holidays.
