  • Chinese five spice and cream finish up the dram with a weightiness that is neither too heavy or too light.

  • I’m picking up evenly-proportioned notes of vanilla and coconut, with more subtle notes of clove, anise, and delicate fruit, all wrapped up in a gentle, malty body. A very versatile whisky.

  • I can see where this release could be intended as a bridge between Asyla and Spice Tree, but I don’t think it quite holds up. While I appreciate the release for having as strong an individual identity as any from Compass Box, I don’t feel the blend is quite up to par with its label mates.

  • Whatever the case, I definitely like the result and would be happy to raise a glass of the Compass Box Oak Cross any day.

  • It was busy, but too much so. It was good but thin - not at all unpleasant but not really solid either.

  • Nose:

Pear, apple, vanilla. Wazy fruits, mild oakiness. Reminds me very much of Great King Street artist blend.

  • Taste:

Thin but fruity and delicate. Sweet with very heavy nods to apple, pear, some lemon zest, little to no heat.

  • Finish:

    Short, like a wisp.

  • Overall:

I wanted to like this but it seemed like a delicate version of Great King Street. It was busy, but too much so. It was good but thin - not at all unpleasant but not really solid either. I feel like this was just over-engineered without a solid footing in what it needed to be. Rank 4.
