Amidst the trending popularity of mezcal, Cenote has released a new tequila that trades out steam for fire-roasted agave. Dubbed Ahumado (literally, "smoked" in Spanish), this is sure to be an interesting one.

Smoky yet clean - it’s more of a liquid smoke than vibrantly ashy or diesel-y sort of smoke. Pop of ethanol.
Light on the palate, pleasant sweetness but the smoke rolls in and covers up all of the other flavors. It’s bland beyond the initial flavors, purely a hint of oak and all smoke.
Short finish, tastes like cedar, light sweetness and a touch of ginger and … you guessed it … more smoke.
I’m not terribly impressed with this expression. Bucking the enjoyable complexity and diversity of flavor of tequila in favor of covering it up with a fairly ubiquitous smoke note could maybe see some use on the bar, but is ultimately without use to a discerning or learning drinker.
