This 2024 release comes to us from Iowa's Cedar Ridge Distillery. Distilled from 100% malted barley and aged in ex-bourbon barrels, this single malt was finished in an eclectic assortment of casks: Cedar Ridge V (a Madeira-inspired dessert wine), first-fill Amontillado sherry, new French oak, new American oak and peated malt finished in ruby port barrels. Bottled at 114.9 proof, this whiskey has a suggested retail price of $99.99.

  • Cedar Ridge has put out some winning malts of late, but this expression tries to bite off way more than it can chew, creating a scattered product that is just much too busy and lacking focus

  • Nose:

Sweet honey, toffee, rising bread, buttered biscuits, sweet oatmeal cookie, raisins, a touch of port wine sweetness and blackberry. Light pepper.

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel with lovely complexity. A touch of peat, a touch of char, lovely red berries, stewed fruits, tobacco and minerality, apple bake and a kiss of smoke. There’s a lot going on here, and while it doesn’t taste particularly old, it does taste particularly complex.

  • Finish:

Long finish, rich and lovely. There’s a lot going on here again, with char, red berries, dates and blackberry dominating while a wisp of smoke hangs on.

  • Overall:

This Special Release is indeed special, and well done by the Cedar Ridge team. Lovely stuff.

  • Score:

    88
