While the taste of the distillate is present throughout the sip, and the label should probably carry an age statement, it shows exceptional promise and I can’t wait to taste this whiskey at a higher age.
It’s decent stuff that works quite well in cocktails, as does all their whiskey, but when it comes to drinking neat that raw woody nature keeps demanding my attention over everything else.
The finish is very long and rich with lingering spices and a hint of honey. This is cask-strength rye whiskey that doesn’t taste like it’s cask-strength! Excellent!
Hot and tight, intense wood. There’s some interesting stuff around the edges, but the wood’s blocking it till some sweetness peeks through at the end. Water helps a little, but not enough. Over-barreled.
The palate echoes those accents, showing dried date, fig, plum skin, molasses and toffee, with a long, rounded cocoa powder and clove fade. It's not overtly maple-y, but it's intriguing and would stand up well mixed with rich, sweet vermouths.
