Catoctin Creek Hot Honey Rye is infused with wildflower, clover and buckwheat honey, along with chile peppers. First released as a 2022 Barrel Select, it is now a permanent offering. Made from 100% pot-distilled rye whisky, the expression highlights pronounced honey sweetness and a rounded mouthfeel, followed by a gradual build of spice from the pepper infusion, per brand tasting notes.
A portion of proceeds supports bee conservation efforts, with $1 per bottle donated to local and national organizations.
As flavored whiskeys go, Hot Honey Rye is a step above most owing to the quality of both the flavoring ingredients and the base spirit. Sip it. Shoot it. Personally, I would try it in a cocktail.
The palate is light and fruity, with baked apple, blueberries, cherry syrup, and a hint of ash. Over time, peppermint and a dusty farm-like quality emerge. The finish shows more syrup and peppery spice. It's unusual, but well-made.
