Catoctin Creek Hot Honey Rye is infused with wildflower, clover and buckwheat honey, along with chile peppers. Originally a 2022 Barrel Select release, it is now a permanent offering. A portion of sales supports bee conservation efforts, with $1 per bottle donated to local and national organizations.
The palate is light and fruity, with baked apple, blueberries, cherry syrup, and a hint of ash. Over time, peppermint and a dusty farm-like quality emerge. The finish shows more syrup and peppery spice. It's unusual, but well-made.
As flavored whiskeys go, Hot Honey Rye is a step above most owing to the quality of both the flavoring ingredients and the base spirit. Sip it. Shoot it. Personally, I would try it in a cocktail.
