Carpano Antica Formula Sweet Vermouth is produced in Turin, Italy, by Fratelli Branca Distillerie, based on a recipe created in 1786 by Antonio Benedetto Carpano. It is from white Italian wines and infused with botanicals including vanilla, herbs and spices. Bottled at 16.5% ABV, it typically retails for about $35 to $43 for a 1-liter bottle.
Rich, fruity and enticing, this sweet vermouth is warmed with notes of fig and dried cherries, and just faint hints of spiced gingerbread and bitter orange peel.
On its own, Antica Formula offers a complex nose of vanilla, raisins, prunes, licorice, root beer, and citrus peel. The body is initially sweet, then slowly turns more and more bitter — almost to the level of an amaro — as it fades in the glass.
Inviting aromas of woody plum, liquorice and raisins pave the way to a rich tapestry of dates and sweet spices. It concludes with lingering tones of nutty oak and cinnamon; refreshing and complex.
