Aged three years in a mixture of select ex-Oloroso sherry butts and ex-bourbon barrels and bottled at natural cask strength (my bottle was 64.4%), this single malt whisky comes from Cardrona, a woman-owned distillery in New Zealand. Cardrona Distillery also produces The Reid vodka. It's priced at $120 per 375-milliliter bottle. Just Hatched is a predecessor to "Growing Wings," the 5-year-old single malt in Cardrona's portfolio.

  • All told it is surprisingly well-developed for a 3 year old whisky — and while the price is hard to stomach at $258 for a full bottle equivalent — it has plenty of charm to recommend it.

The palate is hot with notes of leather, tobacco, orange blossom, peach, almond and cloves.

  • Finish:

The finish is dark and earthy. Tobacco, stewed cherries, plums, clove, cinnamon and sea salt dark chocolate.

  • Overall:

This is tremendously impressive for its age. It delivers an awesome balance of delicious, distinctive sherried character and dark, earthy and spicy notes. It's hot but rich and spectacular.
