Buzzard's Roost Very Small Batch Straight Rye Whiskey is distilled at MGP in Indiana from a mashbill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. Aged three years and finished with additional oak influence, it is non-chill filtered and bottled at 105 proof.
I really enjoyed this interesting spin on MGP’s rye whiskey, and found the charred and woody back end of the experience brought a little bit of a Scotch-like character to the drink.
All in all, this definitely feels like the start of something great. As Buzzard’s Roost continues to refine its process and perhaps selects some older barrels over time, it seems like only a matter of time before word starts to get out that this is one of the best uses of MGP rye the industry has seen in a while. I'd say mission definitely accomplished on creating a sippin' whiskey out of a mash bill I admittedly haven't had all that many pleasant experiences with. The final flavors mirror the earlier sentiments of pine boughs, lemon cream, and some slight earthy spices. Great stuff!
