Buffalo Trace Distillery’s Single Oak Project produced Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey using 96 American oak trees selected for differences in growth rings per inch and growing location. Each tree was cut into top and bottom sections to create 192 unique barrels. Stave seasoning times varied before construction, and barrels received different char levels. The barrels were filled with various whiskey recipes at different entry proofs and aged in different warehouse styles. The project tested seven critical variables across 192 bottles, resulting in 1,396 potential taste combinations. None of the bottles are identical. Barrel #162 was made from the bottom half of a coarse grain tree, seasoned at level 6 and aged on wooden ricks in a barrel with a #3 char. It uses a wheat recipe and entered the barrel at 125 proof.

  • The body on this one is liquid caramel from front to back, spiked with cloves. Strangely, a bit of barnyard character emerges on the nose after some time in the glass, dulling what is otherwise a pleasant, anywhiskey experience.
