Buffalo Trace Distillery’s Single Oak Project produced Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey using 96 American oak trees selected for differences in growth rings per inch and growing location. Each tree was cut into top and bottom sections to create 192 unique barrels. Stave seasoning times varied before construction, and barrels received different char levels. The barrels were filled with various whiskey recipes at different entry proofs and aged in different warehouse styles. The project tested seven critical variables across 192 bottles, resulting in 1,396 potential taste combinations. None of the bottles are identical. Barrel 146 used a rye recipe, entered the barrel at 105 proof, aged in wooden ricks and was made from coarse grain wood with 10 growth rings per inch, level 6 seasoning and a No. 3 char from the bottom half of the tree.

  • Spicier, with some cloves and cinnamon. A little toffee and nuttiness as it goes down and matures in the glass. Not at all bad.
