Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye is a 6-year-old barrel proof rye that releases each year in Buffalo Trace's Antique Collection — an annual release of extremely hyped bottlings. This is 2017's THH release. Bottled at 126.2 proof, this whiskey is distilled from Minnesota rye, Kentucky corn and North Dakota malted barley. It was selected from the fourth, fifth and seventh floors of Buffalo Trace's I, K and M warehouses. The Angels' share took 26.8% of the whiskey from the barrels.

  • Water helps temper the beast, but pulls out more wood notes and dulls the rest of the experience. That said, it’s still one of the better Handys in recent memory.

  • Earthy, spicy, and subtle, Thomas H. Hardy Sazerac is wonderfully nuanced without being bombastic or in your face.

  • It’s young enough that you don’t feel bad using it in a cocktail, but it also has enough uniqueness to enjoy as a stand alone pour.

  • 2017 was a rockin’ year for THH, and this presents as a bold, dessert-laden rye that’s a beast from start to finish.

  • Nose:

Bold nose that’s rich and sweet, heavy on rye spice, maple, clove, brown butter, a hint of cinnamon and sweet caramel. Heavy on dessert character, heavy on the spice.

  • Taste:

The palate is rich and layered — really viscous and borderline syrupy. Chock full of maple, brown sugar, black pepper and cinnamon, ginger and rye spice. Really nice oak structure here; there's so much going on.

  • Finish:

Long finish, packed with maple, baking spice, tobacco, clove, cinnamon and bold rye spice.

  • Overall:

2017 was a rockin’ year for THH, and this presents as a bold, dessert-laden rye that’s a beast from start to finish.

  • Score:

    92
