Released on Nov. 5, 2025, this release from Islay's Bruichladdich Distillery is quite unusual: a rye whisky coming out of Scotland, land of barley-based scotch. Aged seven years in bourbon and American new oak casks, bottled at 100 proof and available exclusively in the U.S. at a suggested retail price of $59.99, The Laddie Rye is distilled from a mashbill of 55% Islay-grown rye from Coull Farm and 45% unpeated Islay malted barley, sourced from multiple farmers within an 11-mile radius of the distillery.

  • This is a rich, complex bottle, very much in the Laddie tradition of new ideas presented in a comfortable, confident wrapper.

  • Nose:

Lovely nose that really does smell like something halfway between a rye and an unpeated scotch: honey, fresh-baked scones slathered in sea salt butter, cinnamon, pepper.

  • Taste:

Beautiful, warm palate filled with fresh-baked bread, cinnamon, honey, and vanilla. It's sweet and warm with just enough spice. There's a nuttiness at play, as well — walnuts and cashews.

  • Finish:

The finish is medium in length, concluding with black pepper, cinnamon, buttered sourdough bread and chocolate-covered walnuts.

  • Overall:

Scotland's take on a rye w̶h̶i̶s̶k̶e̶y̶ whisky is, it turns out, a delight. This is an incredibly delicate expression that balances sweet and spice very well indeed. Well done, Bruichladdich.
