A so-called "secret" release from Michter's (because it doesn't prominently bear the Michter's name), Bomberger's Declaration is a bourbon named for a former iteration of the Michter's Distillery, which was called Bomberger's Distillery. Bomberger's Distillery operated out of Pennsylvania and shut its doors in 1989. The 2024 edition of Bomberger's Declaration is bottled at 108 proof and has a suggested retail price of $120. Michter's incorporates some Chinquapin wood into the aging process, which it says "accentuate[s] the dark chocolate and stewed fruit notes in this big whiskey that are then complemented by the spice notes offering a bold, rich, balanced complexity and a long lingering warm finish for your drinking indulgence.”

  • A true oddball whiskey and a real fall from grace compared to last year's Bomberger's.

  • If you like malted rye, you’re going to enjoy your Bomberger’s even more. But if you don’t, you’ll think it’s a step down from previous examples.

  • Bomberger’s Declaration Kentucky Straight Bourbon (2024) showcases the power of using Chinquapin oak particularly well while also leaving some room for other flavors to emerge.

  • Nose:

Rich and roasty on the nose with toffee, cocoa, tobacco, espresso and a punch of old oak. It’s a darker, deeper, roastier profile this year.

  • Taste:

Rich on the palate, loaded with toffee, vanilla bean, cocoa, tobacco and butterscotch. Big big brown sugar, brûlée and a kiss of brioche.

  • Finish:

Long finish with tons of waffle cone, sweet oak, tobacco, caramel candies and black pepper.

  • Overall:

Delicious, rich, powerful and yet oh so easy to drink. The vanilla, toffee, brioche and maple character is delightful.

  • Score:

    92
