Blackwood Toasted Bourbon 105 Proof is an 8-year-old bourbon distilled by an undisclosed Kentucky producer and finished using Blackwood's signature toasting process. This involves a finish in three new toasted barrels from Kelvin Cooperage: a medium toast (no char) barrel, a char 4 barrel with toasted heads and a char 2 barrel with toasted heads. It has a suggested retail price of $95.99 per 750-milliliter bottle.

Lovely nose full of marshmallow fluff, candied ginger, candied orange, melon, sweet potato, cinnamon and a whiff of grain. As far as I know, there's no wheat in the mashbill here, but there's a light bready note that reminds me of a wheated bourbon.
Moderate viscosity with a bit of heat. Toasted marshmallow meets chocolate mint candies, orange, gingersnap, coconut shavings, cinnamon, almond and pepper.
Some heat continues on a long, evolving finish that brings in barrel char, tiramisu, chocolate-covered almonds, cinnamon, nutmeg, butterscotch, spearmint, anise and a kiss of tea.
This is quite a nice bourbon. It doesn't reach the heights of the original Blackwood Toasted Bourbon, but it's very good (and about $60 cheaper!) and really distinctive, which is important. I always enjoy encountering a bourbon whose flavor profile is notably disparate from its competitors on the market, and Blackwood's flavorful and balanced 105-proof bourbon falls in that category. Founded in 2020, Blackwood is an exciting young brand that is quickly establishing a consistent, unique flavor profile and deserves to be on the radar of whiskey enthusiasts.
