Black Fox Oaked Gin comes from Black Fox Distillery in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where founders John Cote and Barb Stefanyshyn-Cote handle fermentation, distillation and aging on site. The gin rests six to eight months in new American white oak barrels, drawing on traditional methods of aging gin in wood to develop added depth and a profile that leans toward whisky.
Bottled at 46% ABV in 700 ml format, it typically retails for about $84. According to producer information, it shows smoky, woody notes shaped by time in oak, layered over its botanical base.
My recommendation is to sip Black Fox Distillery’s Oaked Gin over ice (that is how I enjoyed it the most), and if you happen to have a bottle of Campari and another of Sweet Vermouth (or a suitable substiture), then make yourself a Negroni
Fans of whiskey and whisky will find quite a bit that’s familiar about Black Fox Oaked Gin. But then again so will gin drinkers. There’s a nice mix of spice, floral notes and barrel character that no other spirit category can provide.
