Produced by James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont, Kentucky, Basil Hayden Toast Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey features a brown rice mash bill and a secondary finish in toasted barrels.
A big wallop of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and a hint of rosemary add to a slightly hot, toasty finish. It definitely has personality for a 40% ABV whiskey.
So, with all of that said, I’m pleased to report that Toast is pretty damn solid. The nose connotes an immediate sweetness, evoking a significant apple-heavy fruitiness alongside honey and Christmas spice notes that immediately feels festive.
With Toast, I have no reservations calling it the best Basil Hayden’s release yet. That might not mean much to some given the brand’s history, but I don’t doubt this release will strike a chord with many whiskey drinkers and even many lifelong deserters of the brand.
I feel this would be great mixed with carbonated water on a hot summer day or when you need a more refreshing cocktail. It's so light and subtle in its nose and flavors. Great for someone that doesn't like the sweeter bourbons or the spiciness of rye.
