  • Not overly complex, but I think it achieves the goal of a smooth, accessible rye — especially if you're a malt fan.

  • Basil Hayden Malted Rye offers an array of cohesive and enjoyable flavors that you don’t often find in one sip, but the brand's 80 proof once again ultimately holds it back, and feeds into the position that it is finally time for Beam to up its proof.

  • I’ve encountered no shortage of in-your-face rye whiskeys in recent years, to the point where I’m actively tired of them. This stuff hits the spot.

  • Mintiness dominates the midpalate and carries the juicy finish with subtle hits of spice and a honeyed sweetness.

Raided Score is a conversion from an external site's score, to our in house uniform scoring system. Please see the FAQ for more.

  • Nose:

Sweet, super malty nose. Lots of vanilla and malt are joined by faint, musty rye undertones — dill, spearmint, anise — plus cola

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel with plenty of malt. Plenty of anise and cola are joined by cloves.

  • Finish:

Short finish. Not a strong suit of the pour. Down and out, leaving behind not a whole lot: Some clove, some cereal grains.

  • Overall:

Mostly enjoyable, malty pour. Not overly complex, but I think it achieves the goal of a smooth, accessible rye — especially if you're a malt fan.

  • Score:

    80
