Barrell Foundation Double Barrel Bourbon is a blend of 8-year-old Kentucky bourbon, 5-, 6- and 9-year-old Indiana bourbon; 8-year-old Tennessee bourbon; and 5- and 6-year-old Maryland bourbon. The derived mashbill consists of 73% corn, 23% rye, and 4% malted barley. Finished in new American oak casks, it is bottled at 100 proof and priced at around $54.99 for a 750 ml bottle.
Despite the improved mouthfeel, I prefer the brightness of the standard offering just a bit more. But kudos to Barrell for giving us something more nuanced than the pushy, double-barreled oak bombs we find too often on the shelf.
Balanced and approachable, Barrell Foundation Double Barrel Bourbon adds richness to its standard counterpart while managing to keep oak flavors in check.
