  • The ABV is high and it needs water, but there’s good length on the finish, where those chocolate and spice notes really come out to play.

  • Unassuming at first, Bardstown Bourbon Co.’s Discovery Series #12 is rewarding for those who take the time to explore it.

  • I really like this release! It sits just a hair behind Discovery 11 for me, but I love the introduction of more spice and orange and tobacco.

  • Discovery #12 an excellent example of how a blend of different distillates can come together to create something better than its parts, but it was missing a little bit of cohesion that would have sent its rating even higher. Maybe it just needed a few more months in the blending tank to achieve that?

  • Nose:

Big orange peel, praline, maple, toffee and some cracked pepper. A good deal of candied ginger here, fresh fruit, buttercream and spice. Pleasant, a bit okier than 11.

  • Taste:

Rich on the palate — pleasant spice here again. Nice oakiness, lovely maple, tobacco, toffee, orange peel, pralines and ginger here again. A bit spicier and more rounded with a nice orange peel element. Lovely.

  • Finish:

Long finish that's heavy on the spice, sweet oak, toffee, tobacco and warm snickerdoodle cookie and cinnamon.

  • Overall:

I really like this release! It sits just a hair behind Discovery 11 for me, but I love the introduction of more spice and orange and tobacco. Just wish there was a bit more of that brûlée.

  • Score:

    92
