  • Long story short, this was a very enjoyable whisky! To be fully transparent, I found Texas Single Malt to be head and shoulders better than the other Balcones expressions I’ve tried.

  • There is an oaky/woody character here that swings from old oak to sawdust and that raw lumber craft character popping up now and then is the one point of the Balcones Single Malt I’m not a fan of. Outside of that raw woody note, this is a good whiskey and one I’m always happy to drink.

  • However, for those looking to push the boundaries of flavor profiles they’re comfortable with, Balcones “1” delivers, albeit at a premium price.

  • Overall, I'm a bit impressed by this. I expected young, hot crafty and the only real offense I am seeing here is a bit more heat than I'd like.

  • Nose:

Floral and fragrant. Musty cardboard. Lots of ethanol. Caramel and some faint sweetness.

  • Taste:

Medium to thick mouth feel. Really reasonable heat on the palate. Musty wood, but not overwhelming. Caramel, raisin bread, toffee, oak and some cocoa. Faint tobacco.

  • Finish:

Short, some heat, caramel and oak. Nice tobacco. No real musty or craft notes on the palate (hallelujah). Other than the heat, this seems perfectly alright.
